A Sonic Friendship: How the Saxophone has shaped Mischa Zupko’s Musical Journey

In the world of contemporary classical music, some of the most compelling stories unfold not just on the page or stage, but in the relationships between artists. For composer Mischa Zupko, one such story began more than two decades ago, when he met saxophonist Timothy McAllister. At the time, Zupko was a rising composer with a bold, emotional style and a growing reputation for pushing boundaries. McAllister, already making waves as one of the premier classical saxophonists of his generation, heard something in Zupko’s music that resonated deeply. Their artistic connection sparked a friendship  — and a partnership — that would profoundly shape Zupko’s career.

It started with a commission. In 2000, McAllister asked Zupko to write a piece for alto saxophone and piano, resulting in the dynamic and deeply personal In Transit. The work explored themes of heritage and identity, weaving together musical influences from Zupko’s own life with the saxophone’s lyrical and virtuosic range. McAllister later recorded the piece with pianist Kathryn Goodson to wide acclaim — marking the beginning of a rewarding collaboration. For Zupko, the saxophone became more than an instrument — it became a voice for storytelling, emotion, and transformation.

Over the years, Zupko would return to the saxophone again and again, drawn by its expressive versatility and by McAllister’s singular ability to bring his music to life. Together, they’ve premiered numerous works, from the cosmic drama of The Seventh Seal to the rhythmic vitality of Nuevo Dia, performing in venues across the country. Their performances — whether in intimate recitals or on larger stages — are more than concerts; they are conversations between friends, each note shaped by years of trust and creative exchange.

This enduring collaboration has not only expanded the saxophone’s role in the classical repertoire but has also helped Zupko evolve as a composer. His music, often inspired by science, philosophy, and the mysteries of the universe, now carries an even deeper emotional resonance, thanks in part to the powerful voice of the saxophone — and the friendship that helped unlock it.

Mischa Zupko’s next release on Cedille Records, From the Skyline, will showcase his works for saxophone, performed by Timothy McAllister and Zupko on piano, plus the Civitas Ensemble and saxophone quartet ~Nois. Recording sessions will be held in summer and fall 2025. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for this special album.
