Chicago Collaboration Shines in New Artaserse Release
The recent release of Leonardo Vinci: Artaserse marks an exciting collaboration between two Chicago institutions dedicated to bringing exceptional music to wider audiences: Haymarket Opera Company and Cedille Records.
Haymarket’s mission is to bring historically informed performances of early-music operas to the stage, introducing audiences to masterpieces that are rarely heard in modern theaters. Through meticulous research, period instruments, and world-class singers, Haymarket illuminates the richness and dramatic power of works from the Baroque and Classical eras. Their production of Artaserse — a dazzling opera by Italian Baroque master, Leonardo Vinci — is a prime example of how these rediscovered works can captivate contemporary audiences.
For Cedille Records, the project reflects our core mission: recording the work of Chicago’s finest classical musicians (and musical institutions) and sharing it with listeners around the world. By recording Haymarket’s production, Cedille helps ensure that these remarkable interpretations extend far beyond the performance hall, reaching opera lovers globally and preserving Chicago’s vibrant early-music scene for generations to come.
To celebrate the release, Haymarket Opera Company and Cedille Records recently partnered to host a festive release party honoring the artists and supporters who helped bring this recording to life. The event highlighted the shared commitment of both organizations to artistic excellence and collaboration — and marked the continuation of a partnership that we hope will produce more projects showcasing Chicago’s extraordinary musical talent.

Cedille’s newest digital single, Mischa Zupko: Harpsichord Concerto is available to stream everywhere. Scored for harpsichord and string quartet, the concerto exhibits highly idiomatic harpsichord writing, brought brilliantly into the present by Zupko’s ingenious reshaping of older musical styles into a thoroughly modern expression.
From Chicago-based composter Stacy Garrop comes INVICTUS, Latin for “unconquered.” The work unfolds across four movements and an interlude, moving between lyrical introspection, fierce determination, and triumphant resolve, with Grammy-nominated pianist Marta Aznavoorian and the Chicago Philharmonic under the direction of Artistic Director Scott Speck. Available 5/8.
In honor of the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we repromote our playlist of Cedille recordings of music by (almost all) American composers based on American themes — people, places, events, etc. — and add a few recent tracks that fit the theme (and bring the total to 50).
