“Home”: Karisa Chiu’s Debut Album Reflects on Roots, Identity, and Belonging
Violinist Karisa Chiu, a finalist in Cedille Records’ 2021 Emerging Artist Competition, is set to release her debut album, Home, in September 2025. While she did not emerge as the Competition’s first-prize winner, Chiu’s exceptional talent and artistic vision left a lasting impression on Cedille, leading to this significant recording opportunity. The album, also featuring pianist Zhu Wang, is a deeply personal exploration of Chiu’s musical journey, encompassing works that connect her to her familial roots and that have shaped her artistic identity.
Raised in a musical family, Chiu began violin studies at age two with her father, Cornelius Chiu, a violinist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Her early exposure to music laid the foundation for an emerging career of distinction, including top prizes at international competitions and performances in some of the world’s most renowned music venues. Currently pursuing an Artist Diploma at the Juilliard School, Chiu continues to captivate audiences with her emotional performances and technical prowess.
The repertoire on Home includes emotionally resonant works by Jean Sibelius, Claude Debussy, and Gabriel Fauré, among others.
“Recording my debut album in my hometown of Chicago was a deeply personal process,” Chiu shares. “This album explores the many versions of home that have influenced my life and art. I hope this music offers you a sense of comfort and a reminder that ‘home’ signifies not just a bed to sleep in or a roof over your head, but those things that are most meaningful for you.”
Home, generously supported by Patricia Kenney and Gregory O’Leary, will be released in September 2025.

Commissioned by Cedille Records specially for our 2025 Emerging Artist Competition winner, oboist Oliver Talukder, as a companion for his Briefly Gorgeous album, Powder is a two-track single of Two Songs for voice, oboe/English horn, and piano by Delfin Demiray, who was Talukder’s classmate at the Curtis Institute of Music. The first song features Chicago mezzo, Sophia Maekawa, while Talukder performs the second song’s special effect and extended technique-infused vocal line himself (as an “overdub”), demonstrating yet another facet of his artistry.
Winner of Cedille Records’ 2025 Emerging Artist Competition, Chicago-born oboist Oliver Talukder makes his solo recording debut with Briefly Gorgeous. Joined by pianist Moriah Trenk, Talukder presents an album inspired by themes of identity, love, family, and belonging. Drawing on his Mexican and Bengali heritage and his Chicago upbringing, the program explores where classical music intersects with Latino and South Asian traditions, creating a musical portrait shaped by Talukder’s unique story.
With the new month comes a new featured playlist on Spotify — or, in this case, a refresh of our Artist Debuts on Cedille playlist, originally created in 2022 to celebrate the inaugural album by the first Emerging Artist Competition winner, saxophonist Julian Velasco.
The update is to celebrate oboist Oliver Talukder, winner of Cedille’s second competition, as well as other artists who have made their Cedille debus since 2022. (Oliver’s track will be added on Friday when his album, Briefly Gorgeous, is released.)
